A little bit about myself:
I am a Cardinal
Raytown South Middle School has been my professional home since 1989. After student teaching at Raytown High School, I began my career here as a paraprofessional. I accepted a teaching contract in 1990, and have been teaching eighth-grade English ever since.
I am a studentAfter graduating from Shawnee Mission Northwest, I began my college education at JCCC, earning an A.A. in liberal arts. I transferred to UMKC and completed a B.A. in English. I returned to UMKC for an M.A. in Education. I have continued my education with classes at Baker, Ottawa, Avila, and JCCC.
I am a readerAs much as I like tech, there is just something special about holding a book. I enjoy young-adult literature, mysteries, nonfiction, and picture books.

I am a family memberI am the first of four children in the Swank family. My parents and one brother live in the metro, and my sister and other brother live out of town. My husband and I have an adult daughter in Omaha; she is a graduate of Raytown South, Truman State, and KU.
I am a collector I think this all got started when I was a kid, and my mom took my brother and me along when she'd go junkin'-– shopping trips to thrift stores and junk shops. I collect cardinals, kaleidoscopes, blue glass bottles, ceramic bunnies, glass swans, hour glasses, gargoyles, magnifying glasses, and blue and white pottery.
I am a Lindy Hopper
Encouraged and taught by our dancing daughter, my husband and I do a bit of vintage swing dancing. If I could time travel, I'd spend a night dancing at Harlem's Savoy Ballroom in the 1940s.
